What Is Gum Disease?

As gum disease progresses, your gums pull away from your teeth, and bacteria fall into the pockets that are created. Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a procedure designed to clean the surfaces of your teeth, as well as your roots, ridding them of plaque, tartar, and bacteria, along with other contaminants and toxins. By doing this, your gums are given a chance to heal.
Using the Cavitron Scaler
Traditionally, scaling has been performed with a metal tool. While effective at removing stubborn tartar, a metal scaler can be painful, especially around already irritated gum tissue. Technological advances have produced ultrasonic scalers, such as the Cavitron scaler, to perform the job with significantly less discomfort.
The Cavitron scaler relies on piezo-electric technology. Operating with low-frequency soundwaves, the tip of scaler moves back and forth at a rate of 28,000 to 36.000 cycles per second, vibrating against the surfaces of your teeth to remove tartar and other buildup. The scaler can also rinse under the gumline, either with water or an antimicrobial agent, which is more convenient than trying to manually scrape your teeth and operate a separate sprayer.
