Can Gum Disease Affect Infants

Posted on 6/20/2022 by Ronald Watkins
Can Gum Disease Affect InfantsPeriodontal disease is an infection in the tissues which support the teeth. Kids and adults both have bacteria inside the mouth. The bacteria mixes with the food particles, mucus and saliva forming a sticky substance called plaque which builds upon the mouth and along the gum line. If this plaque is not removed through brushing and flossing, it can bring up gum infections in a child.

What Causes Periodontal Diseases in Children

The causes of periodontal diseases in children include poor oral hygiene. If food particles stick in the kid's mouth and are not brushed, infection of the gums can result; thus, the kid gets the periodontal disease. The leading cause of periodontal diseases in kids is an accumulation of plaque. Once the plaque hardens into tartar, it cannot be removed by regular brushing; thus, the kid is required to visit a dentist, and during the visit, the cleaning can get rid of it.
Certain medications can bring about periodontal disease in kids; some medicines bring about a dry mouth when the production of saliva decreases .saliva helps in washing bacteria, plaque, food particles and balancing the PH inside the mouth. Some medications can also bring about abnormal growth of the gum tissues, increasing the risk of getting gum disease.

How Can Periodontal Diseases in Kids be Prevented

Good oral hygiene is an important issue when taking care of a child's teeth. As a parent or the child's caregiver, one should establish better oral hygiene habits at an early stage. Brushing should start at an early stage, even before the first tooth's eruption. Using a soft gauze, as soon as the teeth erupt, brush the kid's teeth after every meal. Routine dental visits for check-ups help notice a periodontal disease during its early stages, which are easier to treat. Visit the pediatric dentist regularly.
