How Does the Root of Your Tooth Become Exposed?

Posted on 8/23/2021 by Ronald Watkins
How Does the Root of Your Tooth Become Exposed?A tooth root sits beneath the gum line and helps anchor your teeth in the jawbone. When a tooth root is exposed, it could cause damage to the teeth or gums. You will experience sharp pain and tooth sensitivity when you have exposed tooth roots. If this condition is not treated, it can lead to several dental infections and complications. Here are ways your tooth roots can become exposed.

Gum Recession

Gum recession is where the gums pull away from the teeth or draw downwards, exposing parts of the tooth that are normally under the gums. Extreme cases of gum recession will lead to the exposure of tooth roots. As a result, you will experience sensitivity when eating hot or cold foods.

Injury to the Mouth

Your tooth roots can also be exposed by sustaining an injury to the mouth. Severe mouth injuries can make your tooth lose or break, leading to the exposure of tooth roots. For example, a blow might make a tooth shift in alignment, exposing the tooth root.

Tooth Decay

This is another common cause of exposed roots. If tooth decay is not treated, it will lead to exposed tooth roots. This process happens slowly, and it might take several months to start causing damage. Tooth decay eats through the tooth enamel, a protective layer that protects the tooth. When the enamel is damaged, it exposes the underlying dentin and tooth roots. As a result, you will experience sharp pain and tooth sensitivity when drinking cold or hot beverages.

Poorly Aligned Teeth

Having crowded or misaligned teeth can increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Both of these conditions increase the risk of tooth root exposure and other complications. Visit our offices for more information on how the tooth root can be exposed.
