Alcohol Leaves a Lasting Impact on Your Gums When Consumed Regularly

Alcohol Leaves a Lasting Impact on Your Gums When Consumed RegularlyAlcohol is not good for gum health, whether you drink an alcoholic drink or rinse your mouth with a mouthwash containing alcohol. Therefore, you need to make sure you keep your mouth hydrated so you can prevent gum disease.

Alcohol Has a Drying Effect on the Mouth

Alcohol can do some real damage to the gums because of its drying effect on the mouth. As a result, the saliva flow is stymied, which places you at an increased risk for gum disease and cavities. Saliva is a natural lubricant and is needed to balance out the pH in the mouth. When your mouth lacks the substance, it can trigger severe decay and problems with inflammation. To combat the problem, you need to reduce your alcohol consumption and drink at least eight glasses of water each day. Doing so will hydrate your mouth and add some alkalinity.

Reducing Your Alcohol Consumption

To ensure better dental health, you need to make a conscientious effort to reduce your alcohol consumption. You should also check your mouthwash. Rinse your mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash that does not contain alcohol. We can recommend a mouth rinse for you to use if this is a concern. It also helps to use a tongue scraper once a day when you brush. The scraper will remove the germs on the tongue's surface that cause halitosis.

Acidity and Alcohol

Most alcoholic drinks are also acidic, especially red and white wine, which causes dental erosion and gum disease. The worst alcohol to drink is beer, which has the highest acid content. The combination of fermentation, sugars, yeast, and wheat makes the drink highly acidic and bad for the gums and teeth.

Stay away or drink a minimum of alcohol. If you want to avoid problems with gum disease, this is an excellent place to start. You should also contact us about getting a comprehensive periodontal evaluation so you can stay on top of your gum health and take care of any problems with periodontal disease.
