Gum grafts are an important tool in the fight against progressive disease. If you are scheduled for a gum graft, you may have a lot of questions about it. One of your questions may be about your diet moving forward after the gum graft is done. Do you know what foods to eat, and what foods to avoid after a gum graft? We have some answers for you.
What Is A Gum Graft, and Why Would I Need One?
Gum grafts are used to build gum tissue. Usually, the tissue for the gum graft is taken from the roof of your mouth. The tissue is then placed along the gum line. Gum grafts are used to cover nerves or tooth roots that may have been exposed due to a receding gum line. They can also be used to strengthen the existing gum tissue.
Eating After A Gum Graft
We recommend you wait to eat after a gum graft until the anesthesia has worn off. After your mouth stops feeling numb, you can think about eating. For the first day after you have the surgery done, you need to stick to cold, soft foods. These foods might include ice cream, jello, cold soups, and pudding. After a couple of days, you can try warmer foods. Don't put anything in your mouth that is too hot- such as that amazing pepperoni pizza you always burn your mouth on. You need to eat soft foods for at least a week after a gum graft. Don't chew on the side of your mouth where the graft occurred. Eating or drinking foods rich in Vitamin D, A, and C will also help your mouth to heal more quickly. You need to avoid hard or crunchy food. You also need to avoid spicy, acidic foods as well, because they may be painful.
