If they have, you may have questions about what a bone graft is and why they are necessary for some patients for a successful dental implant. Here is more information about bone grafts.

Dental Implants

If you have lost one tooth, several teeth, or all of your teeth, you have a lot of company. Nearly all American adults have lost at least one tooth. People who lose a tooth or several teeth may feel self-conscious about eating, talking, laughing, or singing in public. Dental implants are a great way to replace your missing teeth. The implant consists of a titanium screw that connects a prosthetic tooth to your gum and jawbone. Implants are the closest thing to your natural teeth.

What's a Bone Graft?

Bone grafts are used for all kinds of procedures when additional bone is needed. For example, you may have a bone graft to place a screw into an arm or a leg. Usually, doctors and dentists take a sliver of bone from your body- such as your hip bone- to grow new bone. Sometimes, cadaver bone or animal bone is used as well.

A bone graft in your jaw is much the same as a bone graft anywhere else. A dentist will take a sliver of bone from your body or use bone from a donor. The dentist will make an incision in your gum and place a bone graft. Dentists then place a membrane over the graft and close the incision. The bone graft needs a bit of time to heal before you can receive an implant.

Will I Need a Bone Graft?

If you recently lost a tooth, you may not need a bone graft. However, to get an implant, the area of your jawbone has to be strong enough to place a screw into it in order to hold the implant securely. An x-ray can determine if your jawbone is strong enough to receive the implanted tooth.
