In fact, if your toothache is caused by a cavity, it is possible that your tooth may need a porcelain crown. Here is some information about porcelain crowns and why they are used to cover teeth.

In some form or another, crowns have been used for decades. During the 18th and 19th centuries, crowns were made of gold or silver. However, both gold and silver are soft metals, and they are easily dented. In the first years of the 20th century, a dentist discovered that when he used porcelain over a metal cap or jacket, the tooth remained strong and blended in nicely with other teeth. Porcelain crowns are now the standard for covering teeth that need protection.

When Are Crowns Used?

The most common use of crowns is to cover and protect a tooth that has been damaged due to tooth decay. Tooth decay happens when bacteria begins to bore a hole in your dental enamel. If the hole is not found and fixed quickly, the bacteria will eventually reach the middle of your tooth, which is soft. Once the infection spreads to the middle of your tooth, dentists use a procedure called a root canal to treat the infection. After the root canal, dentists will place a crown on top of the tooth to protect it.

Crowns can be used for other reasons too. Sometimes, a tooth dies, usually because it has been hit by something, such as a ball. A crown can protect that tooth as well. Teeth can become discolored due to medication, and a crown can restore the tooth to its natural color. No matter what you might need a crown for, they are perfect for tooth restoration.
